Why Is The Extent Of Musk's Fortune The New Republic's Business?



The cover of the July/Aug 2025 issue of the New Republic titled in part “The Obscene Wealth Issue” states, “To count to one billion without stopping takes nearly 32 years. To count Elon Musk's fortune without stopping would take more than 13,000 years. Who needs that much money?”

Such a question raises a number of other questions.

First, did New Republic propagandists care how much money Musk possessed when it was assumed that he was apolitical or an establishmentarian liberal rather than a figure troubled by business as usual?

Did the New Republic wonks raise objections when a goodly percentage of Musk's fortune accumulated as a result of assorted subsidies and tax code incentives in regards to the electric vehicles preferred by those of the intelligentsia such as the scribes of the New Republic?

Often the ranks of the ostentatiously educated virtue signal as to how relativistic they are and reluctant to impose their particular standards upon others.

Then perhaps the most important question raised by the New Republic cover article ought to be if Musk has accumulated a vast fortune in a manner compliant with the laws as authorized by the governing establishment of which the New Republic ranks as a foremost communications apparatus, who is anyone to question how much money Musk possesses and isn't the real threat those thinking they ought to have the power to do something about that?
